Tenerife, Astronomers Experiment, C. Piazzi Smyth

published in 1858 in London, leather-bound, stamped in gilt on covers and spines, 450 pages, with 20 stereoscopic views of the island of Tenerife and the astronomical equipment. Charles Piazzi Smyth was appointed Astronomer Royal for Scotland in 1845 and professor of astronomy in the University of Edinburgh. He researched the wet collodion process photography, infrared astronomy and carried out spectroscopic researches at Madeira and at Winchester in the mid 1880´s. In 1856 he made experimental observations on the peaks of Tenerife in the Canary Islands and two years later he wrote a popular account of his voyage. “Tenerife, Astronomers Experiment” is said to be the first book that was illustrated with stereographs. The book was published by Lovell Reeve, who also published The Stereoscopic Magazine the same year. The book and the prints are in excellent condition. An important book for photography.
