This mahogany large format camera for 18x24cm exposures on plates represents one of the earliest cameras by Ernst Leitz. Known as the Reise-Kameras, these cameras, along with the more renowned Moment camera, were featured in Leitz catalogues circa 1905 to 1910. This is, however, the first time in the history of our auction house that we can offer an example for sale. It shows the features typical for the cameras from this time period, like the folding bed, leather bellows and the focusing screen that can be used in landscape and portrait orientation.
The camera's historical significance is underscored by a petite ivory plaque adorning the front, bearing the inscription 'E. Leitz, Opt. Mech. Werkstätte, Wetzlar.' The wooden body exhibits exceptional craftsmanship, evident in a selection of matching wood panels and aligned slots of the screws. Accompanying this rare find is an authentic Bergmann catalogue dating back to circa 1905, showcasing similar Reise Kamera and Moment Kamera models, along with an array of photographic lenses and accessories. Completing this ensemble is an exceedingly rare, period-correct Leitz Periplan 220mm lens, enhancing the allure of this remarkable piece of photographic history.
